Cat Family - Urban Wild Life in India

The fact that we live on the ground floor and have access to small pieces of soil makes me immensely happy. Not only it gives an opportunity to plant anything you want it also attracts "urban" wild life. Last year I told about a fledgling who found a safe place in our garden and stayed there until it was strong enough to fly away.
When we have something blossoming there are many butterflies and bees around those plants. But recently we were lucky to have welcomed a cat family who came at our backyard wall two weeks ago. First we heard cat's meowing and saw a big cat among the greenery of our plants. Later we heard a thinner meow... that was of a kitten! Later there were already two kittens. So basically the mother cat was relocating their home somewhere near by our house. We still have no idea where it is. It is said in India that a cat changes 7 homes... Other members of our family occasionally saw the cats few more times after that.

Day before yesterday night I went out at the backyard following the kitten's meow and rustling of our citrus tree: one kitten left his dwelling and jumped down the wall for some reason. He regretted his actions I am sure as he started calling his mom lamentably. We didn't really know what to do because as soon as he saw us he chose the corner of the wall behind the curry tree and was looking at us from there. We arranged some milk for him, but he was too scared to emerge from his hiding place even for food. Later he ran towards another end and sat behind the citrus tree wanting to climb it but not knowing how. When we thought we could lift him up the wall I took some old bed sheet in order to fetch the kitten it, thus protecting myself from scratches and bites... But as soon as I came closer to him he HISSED at me so loudly I sprang back scared. Obviously we decided it was better to leave him hoping that mother cat would come at the rescue.
So yesterday morning when I went out to check on the kitten  I witnessed much more than expected to my delight: a cat mother and three kittens with her! Me and D spent time feeding them milk and the only meat we had - some salami. Kittens didn't eat it but their mom seemed to enjoy the treat. My D even got late for office because of the cats but was happy of the reason. Aren't they all cute? The kittens have big ears and cute silly eyes. I wish my baby could see these felines too :)
The mother was alert all the time while D was giving food and I was taking pictures. She won't trust anyone so easily. Many a times I thought I'd like to have a cat at home but I feel that having free urban cats who come and let us take care of them is much more interesting and rewarding. The cats were still there when I left home in the morning and I do hope we will make friends with them at last.
We have started our weekend earlier this time, the cat family is now sleeping on the wall. Wishing you to have a carefree and enjoyable weekend, dears! Meow, meow!

    1. Yes, she did. But I also suppose we were way too worried for a kitten, I saw they can climb the tree perfectly!

  3. Awww! Little kittehs!!!!!! Here they are called 'feral cats', ones that live outside with no owners. Some cities have volunteers that will take the to the Humane Society for free neutering/spaying so that they don't continue to reproduce.

    1. Yes, I suppose you can call them feral cats. But here not them but stray dogs is a real problem, so I heard there was some kind of free neutering for them... but it doesn't help. So I am glad to have cats near by :)

  4. Salami? LOL! Feral kittens are cute but will never let you near them -- I'm not surprised they hissed at you!

    1. Yea, I know... not best to feed to feral cats. rest we offered milk many a times, they didn't refuse :) I bet we pamper them too much!

  5. It is tempting, but feeding a cat milk will give it tummy problems...and you don't want that problem!!
    Cute little faces.

    1. I hope they won't have it :) My husband said that Indian cats love milk, and they do! The mother cat was keen to have it all the time.

The kitties look so beautiful behind the leaves.

    1. Yea... when I first wrote wild life... I thought it was not precise, as cats actually live in the city. So "urban wild life" sounded better :)hehe
I am glad you liked seeing the kitties on your weekend!

  7. Be careful! I would hate for you to get scratched or worse. Remember you're pregnant and the cats may carry a disease.

  10. I love your Mother and Kitten story. I am one of those who people who love, love, love cats. Cats are amazing creatures. My son has three cats, my daughter has three cats, my sister has three cats and I have two cats. We are cat loving people.

Over the years I have taken care of Feral cats too. One particular feral cat was a husky orange male. At first he was quite mean, he was hissing and wouldn't come near me. Little by little he would hang out in our backyard. He felt a sense of protection near our home. I even named him Chester. Then one day he showed up very sick and I took him to the vet, took him back home with me and nursed him back to health. He fell in love with us (hubby and I). Feral cats usually fear someone hurting them....and so they will run, hiss, hide or whatever to protect themselves and their families just as we would.

I enjoyed your Mother and Kitten story. Thank-you for sharing.

PS Some cats love milk. Over the last 50 years I have had my share of cats and some love milk while others don't. Milk has never harmed my cats....feral or indoor.

    1. You are surely are! I think you also now have to have 3 cats as everyone else has! :)
Itw as so kind of you to help that cat... they need help but they are too scared too come closer to humans. They have their reasons. Our cats and her kittens changed thei rhome again I think as we couldn't see her two kittens yesterday and today morning there was none of them to be seen. They might come back but I doubt.
My cat who lived with us for 17 years never used to like milk, he liked sour diary products and ADORED yogurt!!!

  13. How wonderful and how nice that she let you approach and watch, from a safe distance. They are lovely cats, with those wide ears. Of course, if they like the salami and attention, they might decide they are your cats, now.

    1. I wish they did... but nother cat kept on hissing and showing her teeth at my husband, even after he gave her food and water and milk! Verycareful creature. But I think that they left our back yard, heading towards their own lives... We enjoyed their company a lot!

  16. Dearest Anna,
Thanks for your visit to my blog and here I learn that you are pregnant; congrats!
As for your kittens with cat-mom, it is only natural that ANY cat-mom is very loving and protective of her kittens. Not necessarily a sign that they are mean.
Wish someone would have them spayed or neutered as they will have a miserable life without that being taken care of. Within the year, the kittens will reproduce and what are the chances of having a happy and healthy life?
Having six cats ourselves, four of them are being born here at home, we know a little bit about raising them and milk is NOT a good thing to give to them. On animal planet we have seen rescues from apartments full with cats and sadly they had turned BLIND because they got fed milk. Besides upset tummies and diarrhea there is a big risk for their eyes.

Wishing you all the best and enjoy your pregnancy; hoping you feel well!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  17. How cute!! ♥ And what a gift :-). Thanks for sharing these lovely pictures, Anna! About cats and milk everything is already said, as I see ;-). Just wanted to add that cats also shouldn't receive raw pork because it can contain a virus that can be deadly for cats... just for imformation. Maybe the little family will visit you again, would be great! Hugs, Nata
