Wednesday Blanket Update - Beating The Ailment

I am happy to be back here...again. I don't know what exactly happened, but October brought me certain health issues. In my last about drawstring bag I mentioned that I was not feeling well. Little I knew back then that I was going to spend next two weeks at home, curing... chicken pox! At this age (I am 26) it was a very tough experience, but I am completely fine and back to office, though had to spend few more days at home due to flue I got straight after first recovery. Well, I am a strong girl, and I got good support from my family in India and Kazakhstan. Thanks to them!
The only pleasant thing in past two weeks was that I had given attention to my blanket! I couldn't decide whether I shall do this post or wait till I have that "ta-dah" moment. But, ok, you, my dears, already saw the blanket many times, and updating the progress for my own record will not do any harm, isn't it? To the deal.
Does it actually burst with colors into your eyes? I love HOW colorful it is coming along, and this is the effect I didn't expect. When I bought those 6 skeins, they didn't promise to be that variegated looking together. When you look at the blanket from the top, it seems a chaotic arrangement of the blocks, however you notice the certain pattern - alternation of the blocks in each round.
As I had told you before, I used slip stitch method of joining and it looks this way from the back side. I still have to trim and weave few ends, and give a border to overall product. Aww, I cannot believe I am SO close to accomplishing this huge (for me) project! My husband seeing me with a pile of blanket on my laps, while I was sewing the blocks, said that this is so much of hard work. Yes, it is, but very pleasant kind of hard work. My D also asked me whether we can use the blanket in winter any time soon... :) If free time is on my side, we will have this soft yarny creation by the mid of November maximum. And then I will head to the making of a throw, consisting of 9 big squares. I even chose the colors already, crazy me, but will limit myself only up to maximum of 4 of them.
My beauty, waiting to be "whole" in a few days. What would you suggest about lining it? Shall I go for flannel fabrics? Or shall I leave the blanket purely made of yarn? It is coming to be pretty heavy, and I am concerned that it might get stretched with use. As you see the blanket most probably will not be hanging from the sides, our bed is really very broad, and I don't wan tot give too wide border. Like this, it will probably cover only the top surface, anyway I don't think I'll be using as a bed cover much. I wish we had a trailer to take this blankie with us to travels and cozy up the atmosphere there :)
Tomorrow is All Hallows eve, unfortunately I didn't decorate the house that much as last year, plus I am not able to find half of the things I made. I hope to get a pumpkin at least and carve a jack-o-lantern. Diwali, an Indian festival of lights is on 4th of November, so we will be celebrating it too. After that I will start preparing for New Year and Christmas, and miss my home a lot...
Have a wonderful day, my dears! Thanks for your support and encouragement, and welcome to my new followers! I appreciate you find my blog worth reading :)
P.S. Yesterday I published the Raffled Rastafarian Doily pattern on Ravelry, have a look, if you are interested. Honestly, the pattern might have errors, so testing required.

  1. Sorry about your health. Glad to know that you are better now.
Your blanket is looking very beautiful and lovely!! :) Indeed it is a hard work creating such a huge project. But you have a good determination to complete it. Keep it up!! Taking inspiration from you, I too will try my hands on it but maybe, next year. The mild winter here doesn't encourage me to start a blanket project.
I think you must add a lining. It will close the holes and will be easy to maintain.

    1. Thank you, Preeti!
I in my turn was collecting the courage to make a blanket for almost 2 years! In the beginning it really feels like the process has no ending, but see, it is almost finished now. So go ahead whenever you feel inspired enough :) Well, I might go for lining.. bu tthe problem is it'll take me a few more days to attach it. Let's see.

  2. So glad to hear that you are feeling better. Chicken pox for children is terrible, but for a young lady like you it must have been miserable. I was beginning to wonder if you had stopped blogging. But I can see in your beautiful "granny square" blanket that you have not been idle. Love the colors! A lining may help it stay in shape, but it really does not need it. Linda@Wetcreek Blog

    1. Thanks, Linda! Yes, I tried to utilize my free time at home, ad I like the result! I know that usually people don't line crochet blankets, however lining might make the blanket last for many years. :)

  5. I am glad you are over your sickness and feeling better. You have done a wonderful job on your blanket. I never line any of my grannie blankets because they are plenty warm enough with just the yarn. I really like the way you have arranged the blocks in fours. That is really genius!

  11. I could stare at that blanket all day. It's soooo beautiful! Sorry to hear about your chicken pox. here in the states, there's a vaccine now, but I had it when I was in 2nd grade (the pox, not vaccine). Back then in the 1970s, parents hoped their kids got it over with early and would intentionally expose their children to someone with it.

    1. Oh thanks Jojo! I know you love all things colorful, so I am so glad you are liking my blanket :)
Yes, there is a vaccine in my country too, but somehow I must have not been injected it when I was small. Yea, I also read that some parents intentionally expose kids to chicken pox...but this is kind of cruel.

  12. Pleased to hear you are feeling better, chicken pox how awful at your age so much better to get it when you are small and have it over with. Your blanket is lovely Anna, I very rarely line mine unless the back side looks ugly and it looks lovely on yours so if it was me I wouldn't bother, when I do line I use fleece because it's light weight and doesn't fray. Looking forward to seeing it all done. :)

I didn't think of fleece, I shall check out the stores here, if it is available. I'd like to line it for the purpose of making it more hard wearing, however I'd not like to spend time on this now. Thanks, I am glad you like the blanket, Linda!

  16. I think chicken pox are worse the older you are when you get them. I was six months old when I had them, and obviously I cannot remember that. My mom used to tell me that it didn't bother me. My daughter got the chicken pox vaccine - she had to when we moved to the States.

    1. Yes, it is much more difficult in adults, but it is totally fine now.
We have vaccine in my native country, but I don't remember if I got it.

  17. The blanket looks magnificent! And you are right, it would be the perfect blanket for trailering! :D

I hope you're feeling much better now. I've also heard that getting chicken pox in your adult years is a lot worse than getting it as a child.

  19. Sorry to read that you have been ill. I myself am still recovering from major surgery and resting is an issue. The good thing is that the tumor that got removed was non-cancerous. Feels good.
Love your huge blanket and you certainly have done quite a job. At times such projects look overwhelming but the end result is what counts!
I skipped your Halloween as we don't celebrate it and I feel like it is only a brain washing for commercial purpose and it causes so much pollution for the environment as things get thrashed right afterwards... A shame in fact but most play along.
    Hugs to you,
    Mariette

Thanks, I also like my blanket more and more now, when it gets closer to its accomplishment. Well, I myself never spend loads of money on any festival, but I simply enjoy celebrating them, and also I try to do handmade things, so it gets more joyful :)
