Upcycling and Lavender Obsession Weekend

It is never enough when you have only one weekend day. Saturday is already not a weekend when you spend 8 hours in the office and come back home in the evening just to have food and sleep. And Sunday looks like this: all the house work and outing plans, and all the crafting plans are messed up, and the day runs so fast, you won't notice it is already evening... Though we watched a movie Raanjhanaa yesterday (yea, I know a bit of Hindi), I wish I had one more day off. My favorite word here is "nevertheless", yes in spite of all that I squeezed few minutes of hurried crochet.
Here is what it was - making of T-shirt yarn! It is a wonderful upcycling time pass, which brings a lot of joy as you have to cut, tie, spin, and weave it. I collected few of my old clothing items for this project - one T-shirt and two capri. I need much more and my D already showed me some of his old stretchable track pants kept in the cupboard... He knows what a girl like me wants :)
After all the cutting I got the stripes, which were tied together and spun into a ball of yarn.
Isn't it all mixed, crazy-colored and much shabby? I started crocheting something with it already, and would show this soon when finished.
My D looking at all of that process, noticed: "You haven't done yarn shopping for a long time now...". I said: "I am busy with my blanket, so don't need to buy more as of now". His reply was: "That's okay, I don't mind". Hehe, he still remembers I spent quite much on yarn last time but of course, if I say I need more of it we will  buy. A pleasant addition to t-shirt yarn were these buttons I cut from one of the capri. I can re-use them somewhere else.
I wanted to share my latest obsession with lavender color and lavender fragrance. Here are few latest purchases - lavender cream, oil and soap. They smell wonderful! All of them are Indian cosmetic brands. I also have lilac-lavender face wash and one more bottle of oil... Somebody stop me.
While writing about my happy times, I was continuously thinking of emergency situation in Indian state Uttarakhand. People there haven't had any food for 5-6 days, and rescue operation is not able to save them all at the same time. The rains are coming and today there has been an alert that land sliding have happened again. How much a person can take? How much more suffering? All in God's hands but here he is selfish and  deaf, and letting people rely only on each other. Nature has no mercy at times.
I wish you to have a peaceful and safe day, be happy and cherish every moment of life.

  1. I've been wanting to try the t-shirt yarn for a while now. It looks like it would make a soft and squishy rug. Have a good day. :)

  2. Upcycling is the best! Right after lavender baths and lavender rubs, of course ;-D

I hope you show us what you make with you t-shirt yarn. You know, I have a few t-shirts from my little brother (I use them as nightshirts sometimes), but I REALLY LOVE the idea of making a little blanket out of them. I might start searching for how-to-knit blogs ;-)

    1. I know that you like upcycling :)
Well, I think it's a great idea to make a blankie which also will be keeping you warm and happy every time you look at it... you can try crochet,a s knitting such thick stripes might be more difficult.

  4. How do you crochet with those big strips? And what about when you come to where they are knotting to the next strip? Very curious to see your craft when it's done! I love the scent of lavendar too. I have a great hand lotion by Crabtree & Evelyn. Smells so fresh.

    1. I use the biggest hook I have, 8 mm. They just come along as I knit, and later on I might leave them as they are (on the wrong side) or try to hide.
      Good questions, Jojo!
I know.. lavender has a mysterious scent.

  6. What size crochet hook do you plan to use? I made a bathroom mat from my son's old white undershirts, and even a large hook was a challenge. I think my right shoulder is still suffering from the strain. But I love the whole idea of the t-shirt yarn!

    1. I am using 8 mm...the biggest I have so far. Yes! It was a challenge for me too! Perhaps I should have made the stripes even thinner. My thumb is aching still..lol

  7. I don't know if I would have the patience with all the cutting and winding, but it's a great idea and I would love to try it, but like you say there is so little time, I am looking forward to seeing what you are making and yes I love all things lavender too. :)

  8. Your Tshirt yarn adventure looks interesting !! Waiting to see your finished piece :)
My prayers go for Uttarakhand people and stranded pilgrims. I also appreciate that Indian army, naval and air forces have rescued more than 80000 people working round the clock in one of the world's difficult terrains in Himalaya.

    1. Thanks, Preeti!

The worst part is that you feel so helpless in such situations. Poor people, and their relatives... But the army was working really great in rescuing people. Let's hope that this tragedy will end soon.

Yes, the situation got better, but many people are missing, and are killed...

  10. Lavender tip? I only have one. If you're vacuuming, put a few drops of lavender oil on the air filter and it will freshen the air as you clean. I love those raveled t-shirts. How thrifty and creative! I want to see what you make.

I'm so sorry to hear there's still suffering in Uttarakhand. How awful for them. I hope some help reaches them soon.

    1. Oh, a great tip, Rhissanna! :) When I got to parents place, I will try ti there, as here in India we don't vacuum as we have marble flooring everywhere!
I am just arranging some more t-shirt yarn, so hope to finish what I started soon... otherwise some other side project popped in the middle :)

Yes, they rescued many people, but many are missing, and were killed ... and then one helicopter crashed while rescuing people...
